Learning Outcome 4

Learning outcome 4: To be able to critique their own and others’ work by emphasizing global revision early in the writing process and local revision later in the process.

Framing Statement:

Going through a peer review, I like to take some extra time reading through the entire essay once before jumping into providing feedback. I find this necessary, because reading through the first time, gives you an idea where the author stands on their claims, and if it works successfully. Once reading over, I go back to the thesis and see how well it stands for a connector of the claims following in the remainder of the essay. My feedback tendencies usually involve the idea of expanding on a certain point. In the peer review below, at one point the writer brings up the point of how “science could fit into any field” and when reading that point truly stuck out to me. I had recommended that they could expand upon the idea, because the point brought up was not only a very strong claim in their essay, but also tied in very well to the prompt of how the arts and sciences apply into our carrers.

Another point of emphasis I use while going through the peer review is to make sure the writer is incorporating their own ideas into the essay and not just comparing the works that were used for the prompt. As shown below I had left a comment for my peer that I felt at one point they had a great deal of comparison against what the text authors had to state about the arts and sciences, but never connected it back to their self. I felt that if the incorporation of their own voice into that paragraph would not only bolden their claim but better shape the entirety of the essay.

Since this peer review was of a free draft, the focus of my editing was on the global bigger picture edits. I wanted to make sure my peers claims were strong and the evidence surrounding it was much more effective. If we were to peer review on just local edits, the claims and evidence would not get any sort of improvement. Local revision comes along while the author works on the comments received in the global peer review.
